Note: I’ve also included important dates such as application deadlines for some schools; however, it’s always best to check with the PSI’s school website just to be on the safe side.

MAY 1/24 BCIT Women in Engineering Club – Spend a Day

Join this “ALL DAY” event to meet up with BCIT female engineering students and grads, as well as visit our labs and take part in experiments. All female high school students* and recent graduates are welcome!

Location: BCIT Burnaby Campus, Building SE2, Town Square D, 3700 Willingdon Ave, Burnaby

MAY 14/24 – BCIT – Interior Design Programs – Join the Interior Design Program Heads online info session on May 14th from 4 pm-5 pm as they explain the BCIT Interior Design Program options.

The info session will begin with a brief overview of the programs and have a Q & A after the presentation. We will be discussing the Interior Design Fundamentals Certificate in detail and explain both the Part-time option for September 2024 and the Full-time option for the September 2024 intake.

All of the Interior Design programs at BCIT start with the Interior Design Fundamentals Certificate (Year 1). The Interior Design Department at BCIT offers an Interior Design Fundamentals Certificate, Residential Interiors Diploma, Interior Design Diploma, and a CIDA accredited Bachelor of Interior Design.

The NACAC Vancouver International Universities Fair (VIUF) is an event about post-secondary education with university representatives, workshops and more.

APRIL 27/24 – NACAC International Universities Fair – Saturday, April 27th, at the Vancouver Convention Centre(in the newer West Building).

APR 27/24 The Canadian Forces are hosting a Job Fair at the Seaforth Armoury, 1650 Burrard St, Vancouver, BC 9:30am and 4pm

The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada will showcase the capabilities as an Infantry Unit and the following Units will also be present with displays:

12 Fld Amb (Medics); 39 Signals (Signals); and 6 Int (Intelligence)

There will be weapon and equipment displays throughout the day and an assault scenario three times during the day at: 10:45am, 1pm, 3pm 

Members of the public are invited to come learn about available jobs in the Army Reserve and see a display of the different vehicles and equipment used as part of a rewarding part-time career. Visitors may also tour the historic Seaforth Armoury, including the nationally recognized museum of the Regiment.

As members of the Army Reserve in British Columbia, soldiers train during evenings and weekends while serving as a part time component of the Canadian Armed Forces. The Army Reserve offers sustained and stable employment and financial support for education along with adventure and unique experiences.

APR 8/24 – CPABC Coin Competition 12:00 noon deadline to apply, for the Virtual Event that takes place April 20, 2024. Test your financial literacy. Sponsored by the Chartered Professional Accountants of BC.

This  Virtual competition is for high school students in grades 10—12 who are interested in Business and Accounting. The COIN Competition is a multiple choice question exam focusing on introductory accounting concepts. The first place winner receives $1500 for themselves and $1500 for their school. APR. 5/24Early Childhood Education Assistant Program (ECEA),  extended deadline to apply.

For Current Grade 10/11 students.

Held in Richmond during the month of July 2024 ( Free Tuition)

Successful students will EARN dual credits (high school and post-secondary) for the courses taken over four weeks (total 8 credits for toward Gr 12 graduation).

During the ECE Assistant certificate program, students will hear from a variety of people in the field, collaborate with like-minded students, participate in a work experience component and develop your resume to obtain a job when you complete the program.  (Click on Early Childhood Education – ECE – program details for program and course information.)

These courses meet the requirements for obtaining a provincial Early Childhood Educator Assistant Certificate while ensuring that students receive a higher-quality, more thorough foundation in Early Childhood Education theory and practice than just the minimum requirement. This is being offered through SD38 Career Programs and Delta Continuing Education. Delta Continuing Education is approved provincially as a training institution for Early Childhood Education Basic and Post-Basic Certificates and is certified by Human Resources & Social Development Canada. Students gain credits towards a Delta Basic ECE Certificate if they wish to pursue further education locally.

APRIL4/24 – Jill of All Trades is a all-day event led by female mentors to inspire girls from Grades 9 through 12 to pursue careers in the Skilled Trades. You will experience a fun-filled day of practical, in-the-shop sessions. Be ready to see the BCIT facilities, interact with industry professionals, and join a series of workshops in several disciplines that include among others: Ironworking, Sheet Metal, CNC Machinist, Industrial Instrumentation, Joinery, and Motorcycle Technician. If you’re interested, please contact me (Mr. Ng) if you would like to attend.

BC Excellence Scholarships – (You must be nominated by your secondary school to qualify for this scholarship)
Students selected for this award receive a $5,000 scholarship voucher from the Ministry of Education and Child Care that they can use to be reimbursed for tuition paid after they are attending a post-secondary institution that is designated by the Province of B.C. (i.e., approved for Canada Student Loans) or a program provider that is approved by SkilledTradesBC.
Students have five years to redeem their BC Excellence scholarship vouchers; an expiry date is printed on each voucher and extensions are not possible.

When you apply to the college, you’ll be applying for both a degree program and a job with the Public Service of Canada. You become an employee upon acceptance into the program and will receive:

UBC Women in Engineering (WiE) is officially launching this year’s high school mentorship program!

The UBC WiE Mentorship Program strives to increase female* high school students’ access to engineering, and to create a space where they can explore what engineering is and has to offer. Mentees will be supported by mentors through the program curriculum and various mentorship events (eg. Opening Ceremony, University Application Workshop, UBC Campus Tour, chats and activities with mentors, etc). Additionally, mentors and mentees are free to schedule individual meetings outside the curriculum for any guidance and questions mentees may have regarding engineering, here at UBC, or otherwise. NOV 14 – SFU Information Session – Hugh Boyd Sec. – A representative from SFU will be at Hugh Boyd Sec. to conduct a presentation about post secondary programs. If SFU is on your list of institutions to apply to, you will find this information session a good one to attend. You will learn more about their application, admission process, scholarships and the types of programs/studies available. SFU is a well respected Post Secondary institution for your future studies. This session will take place during lunch in the school library.

NOV 15/23 International applicants: Deadline to submit an award application if you’re an international student and you wish to be considered for the UBC International Scholars Program awards. Note: You must first be nominated by your high school AND you must also submit your application to UBC by December 1st, 2023.

NOV 28/23 Trades Training & Apprenticeship Programs Virtual Information Session 6:30-7:30 PM

SD38 Parents are invited to attend to hear all about the Trade Training & Apprenticeship Programs, Dual Credit Programs offered at SD38 with tuition covered for all. Hear from Industry Speakers and Program Instructors. For zoom login and password see the Career Programs slat board in the Career Centre for details. This will be held on Zoom from 6:30 – 7:30pm, where we will present a PowerPoint of  the programs we offer to students who will be in grades 11/12 next year. (See Zoom meeting ID and password in attached poster.)

The Career Programs Office offers many opportunities to explore post-secondary and other career-related programs while in high school.  Many of our programs are “dual credit” where students earn both high school elective credits and post-secondary credits.  In addition, tuition is covered for most of our offerings.

Biotechnology Career Awareness Workshop (BCIT- Burnaby Campus) – Interested in a career in Biotechnology? The field of Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field that involves the integration of natural sciences and engineering sciences. Biotechnology plays a huge role in our everyday lives — from the clothes we wear to how we wash them, the food we eat to how we source them, the medicine we take to treat our bodies, and even the fuel we use to move our vehicles. We need more graduates with a bachelor of biotechnology degree. How would you like to participate in a workshop to learn more about this growing and demanding field? If you’re in grade 10, 11 and 12, you have a chance to be chosen to participate in this workshop. BCIT will submit their application package sometime in late October. There is a fee of $233.64 for this workshop. This five day workshop will begin on Monday, December 11 until Friday, December15th.

October 28/23 (Saturday) – University of Calgary – Open House – Experience U of Calgary at their in-person event!! Tour the campus, learn about their programs, and get the answers to all your questions.

UBC Department of Orthopaedics will be holding a “Women In Orthopaedics (WORTH)” workshop on Saturday, October 28th, from 9 am to 12 pm. This workshop is open to all young women in high schools (grades 10-12), including women-identifying individuals and non-binary and gender non-conforming students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare and engineering, specifically in orthopaedics. The goal is to provide more insight and clarity on careers particularly in the areas of orthopaedics ( science and medicine). This workshop will definitely be an exciting and informative event for the students as they think about course selection and potential career pathways. Attention to all grade 12s! Just as a reminder, and I do hope that many of you have been thinking about it….especially during the summer, it’s almost time to begin making your applications to your choice of Post Secondary schools. Applications for UVic opened September 1st, UBC and SFUs application will open early October/23. BC Colleges application will open on October 1st (Langara College, Capilano University, KPU, Douglas College…), Emily Carr University of Art and Design will also open their application portal on September 15th, 2023.

Langara College Information Session at Hugh Boyd Secondary – Today (Tuesday, September 19th) – This informative session will take place during lunch in the school library. Be sure to attend this session as important topics such as application process, scholarships and the types of programs that Langara College has to offer. Langara College is a well recognized institution that is the largest University transfer college here in the lower mainland (BC).

Invent the Future 2023 Guest Speaker Series 
Invent the Future is Canada’s first and only summer enrichment program focused on bringing Artificial Intelligence (AI) expertise, community, and mentorship to young women and non-binary youths in Grade 9-12. We would like to extend invitations to eligible students who are not part of the program this summer to join our guest speaker series. These talks will cover a wide variety of topics such as robotics, computational biology, computer vision, and many more, and will be presented by renowned faculty members who conduct cutting-edge research in the field of AI (see schedule below). Career Centre News UpdatesJune 15, 2023 – If you’re graduating this year, if you’re attending a Post Secondary school, be sure to check your email or student account for any important messages. Preparation is key to a smooth transition into your first year of study (2023). Be sure to get all your finances in order so you know how you’re going to pay for your tuition fees. Application for student loans are now open if you need to make a student loan.

If you’re going into your last year at Richmond high, start thinking about what and where you would like to study. Just remember, you are not alone in this process and we’re here to help you every step of the way.
